International Global Competition to join in Smart Cities cluster.

Hop Ubiquitous, along with 9 other companies and consortiums, have been worldwide selected for the development of an IoE (Internet of Everything) project focused on the cities of Helsinki, Copenhagen and Antwerp.

Intelligent Cities are booming and there is an increasing in those who want to join the benefits of new technologies and IoE with the aim of improving citizens quality of life. It is time for three European cities: Helsinki, Copenhagen and Antwerp. They have decided to become Smart Cities and look for the organization which best knows how to focus on its needs.

However, as can be expected, the more market, the more competition. For that reason, Selec4cities has deployed an election system of worldwide companies to choose those that best fit to the needs of these cities. It is a competition which has 3 phases to find that company or consortium and to design and develop an IoE platform for smart urban innovation. In the first phase, 57 organizations have been presented with 28 proposals.

First call of this global competition has finished and 10 companies have been chosen; among them is HOP Ubiquitous that has presented its candidacy based on the platform of innovation “Homard”. It is an IoE platform able to manage Intelligent Cities remotely. Homard is part of a larger project called Harmonie which unite Homard, Fiware (it is an independent community, in which Hop Ubiquitous is a “gold member“, that is committed to “build an ecosystem of APIs and open source for the development of intelligent applications”) and other platforms. Homard is focused on three use cases: health, measuring air quality such as emission of gases, noise, temperature and humidity, energy consumption and mobility.

5 things you need to know about Smart Destinations

– What is Smart Destinations Tourism?mock-up-ceuti

– What benefits does it have?

– How does it work?

– Where it can be applied?

– What is the HOP approach for Smart Destinations?

  1. What is Smart Destinations Tourism?

HOP Ubiquitous launches the Smart Destinations Solution focused on the creation of tourist experiences through immersive interactions between physical places and personal devices such as Smart Phones. To this end, HOP Ubiquitous has developed an innovative device to be deployed in Points of Interest to make them interactive and smart; this device is called Smart Spots.

Smart Spot offers an interactive solution based on an innovative technology called “Physical Web”, it means that Web pages and multimedia content are made accessible exclusively in
physical places through Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, without requiring any native Application, simply by enabling WiFi or Bluetooth in the visitor*s smartphone to get a notification and start to interact with the venue.edf

This tourist experience is designed to discover the city during a visit and to get notified about more exciting details, insights and tips that make much more natural and comfortable the experience, when we compare it with other solutions such as Tourism Apps with plenty of information totally out of context or nothing more than copy paste from online guide books. The proposed solution offers access to information at the proper time, at the proper place in order to enhance one*s experience in a specific physical place.

This socially designed experience promotes another type of interaction as well with the tourist, since it involves a co-creation process where experiences are augmented with culture, differences, emotions, and insights that contribute to the final user experience.

  1. What benefits does it have?

Tourism developed through Smart Destinations is an application that allows the user to create their own experience, marking their own rhythm. Thereby, the mobile device is the new guide in an interactive way, connecting and discovering by proximity the interaction points, accessing all the information available and providing the proper insights and tips without requiring major attention. It is what we call an “agile experience”.

3. How it works?smart-poi

– First step: Join through the invitation you receive on your mobile phone in the points of interest or central areas of the destination you are visiting.

– Second step: Don’t worry, just discover the city, you do not need to do anything else, smart spots that are near you in the points of interest will raise a notification to you when relevant content  is available based on  you, so you do not need to look for them, just enjoy, discover and insights / tips will flow to you in a natural way.

– Third step: Enjoy and access all the available information, take in local culture, shopping entertainment and   offers, insights, suggestions etc.

– Step Four: Complete the experience with traditional or experimental food.

  1. Where could it be applied?

We are an international company with a strong commitment to technology innovation and experiential development. HOP is defined as Human Oriented Products; therefore, our main focus is on the users, a reason why the development of tourism through Smart Destinations is available for installation in any part of the world. HOP Ubiquitous develops intelligent solutions supporting the sustainable development of your destination, committed to the socio-cultural and environmental aspects. Our Smart Spots are produced with encapsulations based on natural products; the original design, both indoor and outdoor, is designed to blend in as much as possible to the aesthetics of the point of interaction, while offering all the technological advances in terms of connectivity, outdoor protection for weather conditions, and with support to make totally green and sustainable through its solar power.

Nowadays, Smart Spots are being applied outdoor and indoor in cities such as Aarhus, Denmark, Mexico City and also in Ceuti, Murcia, Spain.

  1. What is the HOP approach for Smart Destinations?

HOP Ubiquitous is approaching Smart Destinations through the Internet of Things (IoT) using technologies such as beacons, physical web, WiFi access points, etc.

Smart destinations implement and increase the use of technology by connecting different spaces offering services to people.

HOP Ubiquitous is committed to the process of a city that wants to carry out an active engagement of citizens and visitors, as part of an open and collaborative development of urban spaces. Thereby, citizens and visitors are both consumers and producers of information, improving the management, content and experience of your tourism resources.app-ceuti

HOP Ubiquitous has created a new way of communicating: Smart Points of Interaction (Smart POIs)

These interaction systems invite users such as visitors and citizens in the City to actively participate and get involved in the city development. For this purpose, Beacons and Physical Web over Bluetooth Low Energy are being used as a new medium to interact, access to context-based content and collaborate through your Smart Phone.

This context-driven and opportunistic interaction between users and Smart POIs offer a unique opportunity to engage with citizens. As a difference with classical tourism Apps, installing anything in your phone is never required such as native Apps, you do not need to go through menu, submenus and multiple options to reach the information that you would like about the place that you have in front of you. Smart POIs are context-aware, your location is the driver and it not only provides the classical Wikipedia kind of content, as well an agile experience with tips, insights and the content that you need to enhance your experience.

IMG-20170209-WA0015

In details, Smart POIs are supported by the advanced beacons developed by HOP Ubiquitous called Smart Spots. These physical resources are the technology which permits interaction with any Smart phone and multiple physical places. Simply, Smart Spot sends a notification to your Smart Phone inviting you to participate (as a typical SMS or WhatsApp notification). This notification grants you access to the Web App which enables interaction with the multimedia content.

HOP Ubiquitous has used these Smart Spots as a project of citizen co-creation, generating a platform which allows for projects validation and opening a suggestion box in Aarhus, Denmark (visit www.siidi.eu for more details).

Additionally, Smart Spots have multiple applications, such as local trade impulse, promotion of touristic points and infotainment. Smart Spots are also equipped with environmental monitoring capabilities such as temperature, gases emission, humidity, noise, ground-borne vibration and even city luminosity. These devices make easy the management and maintenance of the different energy sources of the city, and this contributes to the sustainability and resource optimization.

Smart Spots are integrated into the surroundings through design enclosures built with natural materials which have strength and durability. They are designed by HOP Ubiquitous, the design is oriented to optimize their lifetime to the maximum in outdoor conditions, at the same time as they offer a compact size and organic design for its seamless integration with the city.

Learn more and discover how this technology is helping to co-create in Aarhus, Denmark, where It will be available until 27th February in the coming post.
